Mumbai officials have reported that a Ferry service from Nariman Point to Borivali is expected to start by October 2017. A senior official from the Maharashtra Maritime Board stated that 31st January was the last date to submit the proposal and Expression of Interest for this project and the proposal was accepted and approved by Star Ferries. It was proposed that a ferry would operate every half an hour from both the points and the journey each side to the other would take 45 minutes.
At the Borivali point, the construction and building work has already begun since they already have a jetty. The depth of water for the jetty to sail would be three metres, however, there is no jetty at Nariman Point. The officials have also said that they want begin from only these two points to begin with, and if they response is good, there will be more connecting stops at Juhu, Bandra, Versova and Marve. The proposed timings for the service would 6.30 am to 9 pm, though night operations still need to be considered.
Chief Secretary Johny Joseph in 2008, finalised the bidding criteria for this project of which phase 1 was estimated at Rs. 700 crore. Now, however, the cost of the same project is estimated at Rs. 2,000 crore which was to be implemented on a build, own, operate and transport basis.
