Situated in New Delhi, this City Park is spread across an area of 90 acres of land. Counted as one the rare Historical Places, this place unfolds few Era’s of City’s History. To get some fresh air with serene view, you can find loads of Delhites walking around this garden on any day which is also called as lungs of Delhi.
Landscaped in 1935, it was named Lady Willington Garden on the name of the wife of then Governer-General of India. Re-landscaped in 1968 after Independence and renamed as “Lodhi Gardens” with an addition of glass-house to it. Punctuating the abundant nature, the place houses many big and small monuments with natural terrain.
Situated between Lodi Road and Khan Market, you can enter the Garden from both the sides. Upon entering from Khan Market, a concave shaped Athpula Bridge welcomes you, with 8 pillars forming 7 arches. The middle arch is the longest one with subsequent arches becoming smaller. Considered as the rare imprints from Akbar’s time, this bridge is 400 years old which was built by Nawab Bahadur over a canal that connects Yamuna.
After crossing this, you will come across a fort called Sikander Lodhi Tomb in an octagonal shape of Lodhi Era. Build in 16th century by Ibrahim Lodhi, the tomb has a high dome with painted ceiling around. Moving ahead of this tomb, you will find Sheesh Gumbad opposite to Bara Gumbad. Crafted with blue enameled tiles which gives an impression of mirror, is was names as Sheesh Gumbad, however now very few such tiles have been left now.
With one mosque on one side and guesthouse on other, Bada Gumbad is one of the most pleasing discoveries of this place. The interior of the mosque is well-reserved with beautiful engraved Geometric Designs from five arches. As you walk towards the Lodhi road, another majestic octagonal structure representing Sayyid’s dynasty is Mohammad Shah Tomb. With elaborate circular painting on its ceilings, it is a biggest structure in the Lodhi Garden. This absolutely Symmetrical Monument is very Photogenic with peculiar “Chhatris” all around the octagon.
While exploring this Marvelous Garden, you will also come across various kinds of birds within the premises that make the place more alluring. Film-makers choose this garden to depict the backdrop of Delhi and Novelist pen down deepest of their thoughts while spending some time close to nature.
