Ask any Jadavpur University student their favourite place in the college, and it will indisputably be the canteen. Milan Da’s canteen called ‘Alapan’ is a one-storied compound surfacing  the Subarna Jayanti Bhavan in the Campus. Any student will go on record to say that the famous ‘Dhops’ (fried edibles wrapped in Besan) are irresistible and one of a kind. Filled with enthusiastic and intellectual students, this canteen remains the most acclaimed of the lot.

The age old saying in Presidency College is Pramod Da’s canteen is part of the 4 P’s that make the college. The other three being prem (love) , politics and porashona (studying). The old world charm of the canteen is hard to come by. The hospitable nature of Promod Da is unequalled. Students lounge around there discussing matter old and new. The college is surrounded by world renowned cafes, but the students vouch for the unique atmosphere in this canteen.

Adda was never so popular at St. Xavier’s, at least in Arun da’s canteen. The students are stopped from sitting in the canteen before 3 pm, but they still do it. Talk of not following rules and being rebels in college. More than food, the students gather here for the much needed break and adda.

In this renowned canteen Rakhal Da, the owner was the source of inspiration for the students. Though he has passed away, the students assert the ambience remains the same. Students gather here to discuss everything from politics to theatre.
