Kalighat Temple is one of the Oldest Temple in the City of Kolkata. It is believed to be of the era of Chandragupta II. The present structure is more modern. Devotees and Tourists visit this temple in huge numbers to offer prayers. Located in South Kolkata the place gives a very spiritual feel. The temple is mainly to worship god Kali whom the Bengalis have a high regard for.

This Temple structure is beautiful. The Architecture is one of the best amongst all the Temples. The main Temple is of Goddess Kali. There are also twelve shrines devoted to Lord Shiva and one to Radha-Krishna. The story behind its inception is that Kali came in the dreams of Rani Rasmoni when she was going to offer prayers in Kashi. Kali Goddess told her in her dreams to build a temple here and offer prayers to him here. People who visit this temple also make there way to Belur Ghat. The temple is surrounded by the mighty Ganges.

Situated centrally in Asutosh Chowdhury Avenue, Ballygunge, devotees can be seen offering prayers here in huge numbers. The other name for this temple is Lakshmi Narayan Temple. The whole Temple is made of marble. Lord Krishna’s teachings adorn the slabs. The temple has the statues of deities Durga, Krishna and Radha along with Shiva in meditation posture.
